Announcement: IOWP was suspended in 2020 in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Inside Out Writing Project 831 (iowp831) was founded in 2002 as a way to build solidarity with women who participated in the dissertation project Writing Against Time: The Life Histories and Writings of Women in the Santa Cruz County Jail (Reynolds, 2008). As a feminist action research project, reciprocity and solidarity guided the research, workshops, and campus and community organizing that followed... Reynolds had been entangled in the child welfare and juvenile and adult criminal justice systems herself, and eventually found a healing path featuring higher education. Returning for the dissertation brought her story full circle with people inside--who unfurled their life histories in depth-interviews for the dissertation. From 2005-2020, iowp831 was fueled the boundless energy of many dozens of brilliant and fiercely inspired Cabrillo and UCSC Student-Interns, who expanded workshops to all genders, added arts and music, and routinely organized for critical education on the outside.
